Frequently Asked Questions

What types of websites do you build?

We build websites of all shapes and sizes, from small business brochure sites to large-scale enterprise platforms. Our developers work in WordPress and .NET, recommending the best platform based on your project’s scope and functionality.

  • WordPress is a great fit for most small businesses and nonprofits. It’s flexible, easy to manage, and great for clients who want to manage their own content.
  • .NET is typically used for larger or more complex websites that need custom development or integrations with other platforms or data systems. It’s powerful, secure, and highly customizable, making it perfect for enterprise projects or unique functionality needs.

Here are a few common types of websites we build:

  • Brochure sites – A small but mighty online presence designed to validate your business to potential customers. Typically includes pages like Home, About, Products/Services, and Contact.
  • Conversion-focused sites – Built to drive user action – such as filling out a form, booking a service, or completing a purchase. Includes e-commerce sites, membership systems, and lead-gen landing pages.
  • Non-profit sites – Designed to serve your mission and your audience – whether that means collecting donations, sharing programs, or encouraging volunteer involvement.
  • Enterprise sites – Large and complex builds that often require system and third-party integrations, advanced functionality, and long-term scalability.

Whether you need something simple or complex, our Montana web design and development team will guide you toward the best platform and build a custom site that works for and grows with you.

What does a website cost with Tempest?

Just like businesses, no two websites are the same – so we provide custom quotes tailored to your goals, features, and functionality.

Website design and development pricing depends on several factors, including:

  • The size of your site (a few core pages vs. dozens of detailed sections)
  • The complexity (think simple brochure site vs. full e-commerce, membership portals, or enterprise-level builds)
  • Features and integrations, like event calendars, donation forms, blogs, or third-party systems
  • Content and visuals – are you bringing your own assets or would you like help from Tempest with copywriting, photography, or video?

Most of our small website projects start around $5,000, but we’ll walk you through the variables that can impact pricing so there are no surprises. Once we understand your vision, we’ll create a unique proposal that outlines everything from design and development to launch and maintenance options.design and development team will guide you toward the best platform and build a custom site that works for and grows with you.

How long does it take to build a website?

It depends! Every website project is different, and timelines can vary based on a few key factors:

  • Project Complexity – Are we building a simple brochure-style website or a feature-rich platform with e-commerce, memberships, or custom integrations? The more functionality your site requires, the more time it takes to do it right.
  • Our Production Schedule – We support a wide range of Montana businesses, nonprofits, and tourism organizations. While we’re pros at juggling multiple projects, our calendar can fill up quickly – especially during peak seasons.
  • Your Availability and Responsiveness – We keep projects moving with clear communication and efficient workflows. The more timely your feedback and content, the faster we can launch your new site.

All of that to say: if you’re prepared and ready to move fast, we’re ready to move with you! No matter the project, we’ll provide an estimated timeline at the start and keep you informed every step of the way.esign and development team will guide you toward the best platform and build a custom site that works for and grows with you.

What is your website development process from start to finish?

We keep things simple, streamlined, and collaborative from kickoff to launch. Here’s what you can expect:

#1

Kickoff Conversation & Discovery
We’ll start with a quick call to talk through your goals, timeline, and what kind of website you need. This includes functionality, features, and inspiration—what you love (and what you don’t). We’ll also discuss how Tempest can support content creation, SEO, and ongoing site management. By the end of this step, we’ll have a clear strategy and game plan to move forward.

#2

Custom Design & Development Proposal
Once we’ve gotten to know your project, we’ll send over a free, no-commitment proposal tailored to your goals. We’ll outline everything from strategy and design to development, launch, and post-launch maintenance – so you know exactly what to expect. Once the proposal is approved and your deposit (if applicable) is in, we’ll get started on site architecture and creative direction.

#3

Creative mockups and wireframes
Using your brand assets, imagery, and content, we’ll design website mockups for key pages that set the tone for your site’s look and feel. This will include layout, visual hierarchy, and user interface elements. While not every page will be mocked up, we’ll design enough to confidently establish the creative direction. From there, we’ll collaborate with you to refine and iterate until the design feels just right.

#4

Website Development
Once mockups are approved, we schedule your project with our development team and begin bringing your website to life in code. Throughout the build, we’ll keep you in the loop with regular updates and share any suggestions to enhance performance, functionality, or design. Our developers combine clean code with a deep understanding of interface (UI) and user experience (UX) best practices – so your site works smoothly on every screen, from mobile to desktop.

#5

Pre-Launch Review & Launch
When development is complete, we’ll give you secure access to explore the site on both desktop and mobile. This is your chance to review, test, and make sure everything looks and works just the way you want. Once you’ve signed off, we’ll handle the technical side of launch – from domain setup and DNS updates to final performance checks. Every site we launch is audited for SEO, accessibility, speed, and security to ensure it’s set up for success from day one.

#6

Ongoing Maintenance & Training
No website should be a “set it and forget it” situation. During the proposal process, we’ll outline available hosting and maintenance options, but you can always adjust later. Regardless of your plan, we keep your site’s core systems up to date for speed, security, and long-term performance. Want to manage your own content? We’ll train you (or your team) so you feel confident making updates moving forward.

Do you offer additional services alongside website development?

Absolutely! While website design and development is the bread and butter of what we do, it’s just the beginning. At Tempest, we offer a full range of digital services to help your brand grow online, all crafted right here in Montana.

In addition to web design and development, our in-house team offers:

Whether you need content, strategy, or ongoing support, we’re here to build a digital presence that performs – today and long-term.

Can I see statistics on the website traffic and goals?

Absolutely. Keeping a pulse on your website traffic and user behavior is essential to making smart marketing decisions—and we make it easy. Every Tempest-built website comes integrated with Google Analytics, which tracks anonymous data on visitor traffic, sources, user behavior, conversions, and more. This allows us (and you!) to monitor how your site is performing and ensure it’s meeting your goals.

We’ll set up a custom reporting dashboard based on your specific priorities, and send you monthly reports via email. You’ll also have access to your real-time data whenever you need it. If you’re on a hosting plan with advanced analytics, we’ll include additional insights like:

  • Keyword performance via Google Search Console
  • Deeper user behavior and trend reporting
  • Recommendations based on emerging opportunities or areas for improvement
Do you offer ongoing website maintenance and hosting?

Hosting:

We partner with a well-known hosting agency, WP Engine for our WordPress sites. For .NET sites, we host in-house using a local Helena data center.

  • All hosted sites benefit from
    • Unlimited bandwidth & storage for website-related images, videos, and files
    • Advanced bot/spam, brute force, and malware protection
    • Security certificates that ensure an encrypted connection between the site and users (https)
    • Regular backups of all database and website files, and the ability to restore backups on the fly
    • Ability to spin up development and staging instances of a site to make large functional changes without website downtime
    • Basic analytics reporting from Google Analytics
  • Some hosting plans come with added benefits:
    • More comprehensive reporting, including search keyword performance from Google Search Console
    • Built in retainer time for website updates and improvements
    • Annual site review and recommendations for improvement
    • Email hosting

Maintenance:

  • All hosted sites receive regular updates of core, theme, plugins, and libraries to keep the site secure and take advantage of latest features.
  • For hosting plans that include built in time, it can be used for content updates, code improvement, new functionality and features. If work requested will take longer than the allotted time, we can provide an estimate.
  • For WordPress sites, we can provide access for authorized users to manage their own content.
  • For .NET sites, we can build a content management system integration to allow for content changes.
Who owns the website once it’s launched?

You do! Once your website is live, you own the domain, the content, the images, and the site itself. Tempest is here to support your success long after launch. We’ll continue to manage hosting, DNS, maintenance, and anything else you need – but at the end of the day, it’s your site and your story. We’re just happy to be part of the journey.

What do I need to do to get started with website design or development?

Whether you’re building something brand new or giving your current site a refresh, the best place to start is by contacting the Tempest team to schedule a discovery meeting. We’ll talk about your goals, audience, and what you’re hoping your website will do for you.

To make the most of that first conversation, here are a few things that help us hit the ground running:

  • Bring examples of websites you love (and those you don’t) – layouts, colors, features, or overall vibes. Visual references help us understand your style.
  • Have your brand assets ready, if they exist – logos, fonts, colors, and any existing photography. Don’t worry if you’re missing some pieces, we can help fill in the gaps.
  • Share your timeline – Knowing when you’d like to launch helps us shape the project plan.
  • Identify key decision-makers upfront – This helps streamline communication throughout the proposal, design, and development phases.

Don’t stress about having it all figured out, we’ll guide you through the process. The goal is to collaborate on a site that looks great, functions smoothly, and reflects your brand.

Will I be able to make updates to the website myself?

Of course. We build websites with your long-term success in mind and that includes giving you the ability to make updates when you need to.

  • For WordPress sites, we’ll set up user access with the right permissions and train you on how to confidently make content changes, upload images, publish blog posts, and more.
  • For .NET sites, we can integrate a custom content management system (CMS) so you can easily make updates without touching a single line of code.

We’ll tailor the CMS to your needs and provide training so your team feels empowered to manage the site moving forward. And of course, if you’d rather leave the updates to us, we offer ongoing maintenance and support, too.
